Bisola got married five years ago, struggling to have a child. The level of desperation to have one is so high that she would do anything to have one. The constant nagging from her mother in law seems like its never going to stop till she gives her son a child. Bisola was always crying, loosing appetite, thinking and sometimes these thoughts are suicidal thoughts. Even when her husband told his mother that his wife was medically and physically okay and also him but this didn’t change her belief that is barren. So many failed planned from her mother in law, like bringing girls from the village to the house to cook for her son and also tried seducing him but after seeing the love that exist between them, they would run which made mama very angry. Bisola’s husband was the most wonderful husband in the world and never for once sees anything wrong with the wife and his love for her grows everyday. When his mother’s constant nagging was becoming too much which has made his wife suffer so much from her behavior, making her depressed and always weak from crying too much, he arranged to take his mother back to the village one morning and while helping her packed her things, he also made sure he packed all her concoction and herbal mixtures which she always forced his wife to take.
They visit the hospital after mama’s drama, the doctor explained to Bisola and her husband how all the drama has affected her psychologically and she maybe experiencing a postpartum depression. Hannah and Micheal are newly weds, still enjoying their new found step of love, they decided to take things slow and also decided to wait a while before having children. A year later, Micheal’s mum was sick and brought to the city for proper treatment. When she got to the city, Hannah took a month off from work to take care of her. She drove her to all her appointments, made sure she always take all her medications, her food was always on time, she did absolutely everything to make her stay comfortable. Micheal was very happy with his wife’s concern and care towards his mother. One evening on his way coming back from work, Micheal decided to appreciate his wife’s effort towards his mother’s health. He got her expensive gifts and made a reservation for them at her favorite restaurant for a lovely dinner. Hannah hugged her husband and showered him with lots of kisses when he showed her the gifts while his mother was behind them with an unpleasant expression on her face. She interrupted them and told Hannah that instead of her thinking about having a child soon, she is here smiling and laughing over her son’s lavish spending. these words from her mother in law pierced her heart deeply, she was down and could feel her own tears burning down her cheeks. Micheal’s mother left the city after her son noticed that she was strong enough and also too strong to cause trouble in the house. Two years into their marriage, Hannah had a baby girl and when Micheal’s mum came to visit, she was more concerned about the sex of the baby saying, the first child in any of their lineage should be a male child, that if Hannah had a good luck and was a good wife from their tribe, she would have given birth to a male child. This made Hannah really depressed, a new mother who had no experience and needed the help of her mother in law. She was really sad and wondered how everything would have being different if her mum was still alive. Hannah shut herself from everything, including her baby’s cry. Micheal saw how things were going too hard on her, he asked the mother to go back to her own life and let him live his in peace. He told his mum a girl child is as important as a boy too. Micheal noticed how Hannah had distanced herself from her usual being, Someone that was so excited to bringing a baby into their lives. He took her to the hospital, the doctor explained postpartum depression to them and might be a key factor to her recent behavior.
They listened and carried out all doctor’s advice, she loved her daughter so dearly and was happy for the husband’s support during her depression time. At their daughter’s 2nd birthday, Hannah and Micheal announced they were expecting two boys.
what is postpartum depression?
Postpartum depression (PPD), also called postnatal depression, is a type of clinical depression which can affect both sexes after childbirth. Symptoms may include sadness, low energy, changes in sleeping and eating patterns, reduced desire for sex, crying episodes, anxiety, and irritability. (content has explained on Wikipedia)
Postpartum depression shouldn’t be taken lightly. It’s a serious disorder, but it can be overcome through treatment
- Physical changes After childbirth
- a dramatic drop in hormones (estrogen and progesterone) in your body may contribute to postpartum depression which is always the main factor.
- Other hormones produced by your thyroid gland also may drop sharply — which can leave you feeling tired, sluggish and depressed.
- Emotional issues.(lack of support, being a single mother, constant nagging from family etc)
- You cry a lot, even when you don’t know why.
- You’re exhausted, but you can’t sleep. Or you sleep too much.
- You can’t stop eating, or you aren’t interested in food at all.
- You have various unexplained aches, pains, or illnesses.
- You don’t know why you’re irritable, anxious, and sometimes downright angry.
- Your moods change suddenly and without warning. You feel out of control.
- You’re having difficulty remembering things, you can’t concentrate, and you’re unable to make simple decisions.
- You feel sad for no obvious reason.
- You have no interest in things you used to enjoy.
- You can’t bond with your baby. You feel disconnected and wonder why you’re not over-the-moon with joy, like you thought you’d be.
- Everything feels overwhelming. Life is hopeless.
- You feel worthless and guilty about your feelings.
- You can’t open up to anyone because they’ll think you’re a bad mother and perhaps even take your baby, so you withdraw.
- You want to escape from everyone and everything.

If you have symptoms of postpartum depression, you should see your doctor as soon as possible so that you can get started on treatment.
main treatments for postpartum depression: medication and therapy. Either can be used alone, but they may be more effective when used together. It’s also vital to make some healthy choices in your daily routine.
Postpartum depression is serious and not something you should attempt to treat without a doctor’s input according to healthline.
Most of my findings are from ‘healthline’ and you can visit your doctor to know more if you are expecting or aspiring to and also it doesn’t mean the mother alone. A father or let me say a man too can suffer from postpartum depression. You don’t have to wait till you are sick before visiting your doctor, some things you hear from others that have experienced it, you can ask to be well informed. your right information might be useful to someone in need of it and ‘no knowledge is wasted they say’
“from the above stories, it doesn’t mean mother in laws are the reasons behind postpartum depression, i just wanted to give an inside look to one factor and share someone’s experience for more understanding“
